Magnificent Mural Arts in Atlantic City

Cori at city hall in Ventnor, New Jersey
Did you know that Atlantic City has a mural arts program?
Over Memorial Day weekend my family and I were in Atlantic City and we had the best time! One of the things that we did was look at some of the murals in the city. The Atlantic City Arts Foundation has created over 50 murals in the city. These murals are beautiful and inspiring! We explored some of the murals in the city. It was exciting and the ones I saw inspired me to learn more about the people in the murals.
I hope you can visit Atlantic City as well to experience this great history.

John Henry Lloyd
John Henry Lloyd was a professional baseball player who played in the Negro Leagues and was known as “Pop”. He was born in 1884 and had to go to work instead of going to school.
When he was young he found that he was good at baseball and fell in love with the sport. For over 27 years he played or coached baseball professionally. I like that he and other black players found a way to play baseball in the Negro League and show their talent. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977. When he retired he lived in Atlantic City and coached youth baseball teams.

Sammy Davis, Jr
Sammy Davis, Jr was born in 1925. He was an entertainer and began his career as a child. He rose about the limitations that he faced to become a successful singer, dancer, actor, comedian and television producer. I am inspired by Mr. Davis because there were many times in his life he was knocked down but he did not stay there. He travelled all over the world doing what he loved and performed many times in Atlantic City.

Sara Spencer Washington
Sara Spencer Washington (also known as “Madame Washington”) was born in 1889. She founded the Apex News and Hair company. She was one of the first African American millionaires. Her beauty products met the needs of African Americans and her magazines showed the beauty and style in the community. Madame Washington’s company was located in Atlantic City and she brought jobs to many people. This is my favorite mural of all. It looks like Madame Washington is looking over the city and watching out for people.
I hope that you can visit Atlantic City soon and enjoy the amazing murals!
See you soon!
